Pinning Kim Dawson into a genre or sound is impossible. Her experiences and incorporate them all into a truly genre-crossing style. Her commanding voice demands attention and can change the mood of a whole room. Drawing from a broad range of influences including jazz, soul, R&B, pop, and gospel, Dawson is proud to have a truly non-conforming sound in a world full of labels.
From a young age singing in church choirs to completing her degree in opera performance, whether leading band or performing solo, she is guaranteed to deliver a masterful act. Dawson boasts live-stage experience with legends like Bernard Purdie, George Porter, Jr., Karl Denson, and Stanton Moore in addition to touring with the all-star groups Steel Pulse, Tonality and The New Mastersounds. She was also a founding member of the a cappella group Urban Method, with whom she was a finalist on NBC’s The Sing-Off. Since moving to Los Angeles, Kim has starred in “A Little Night Music” at the Tony award-winning Pasadena Playhouse, been featured on Jimmy Kimmel Live and appeared on the Grammy award-winning album “So She Howls” by Carla Patullo.
As a member of SAG-AFTRA, Actor’s Equity and the Recording Academy, Kim makes sure to stay involved in every aspect of the entertainment industry. Her ability to float from session singer to soloist with a live band to acting to ensemble singer has earned her the nickname “Swiss Army Knife.” And she delivers in every area.
Kim Dawson will tell you, “I don’t write songs about nothing” and it’s the real truth. Every song Kim composes makes a statement you’ll carry with you long after the show is over. You’ll hear a beautiful meld of her range of experience and influences and background whether she is penning an original tune for herself or in collaboration with colleagues.
While she may cross genres, you will walk away from a Kim Dawson show knowing exactly who she is. And you won’t be able to label it, either.
